We learned about what penguins eats, about their chicks and enemies this week. The students drew pictures in their journals about our research. Ask your child to tell you about their food, chicks and enemies. We did some penguin math, the children fed their penguin yellow and green penguins and then added them up. Did you know that penguins live on the beach, on the rocks and in the rainforest, not just in Antarctica? We are learning all about penguins for the next 3 weeks. This week we learned about their different habitats and drew pictures of them on their journal. One of our centres is a board game centre, the students played "Ghost", HighHo Cherry Oh" and Discovery Garden." Letters and NumbersWe practiced the letter /b/ this week and filled in the missing letter in our morning message. We talked about the difference between letters and words, the students counted the words in each sentence.
This week we celebrated Pink Shirt Day by sharing how to be kind and how to be a good friend. The children painted and decorated pink shirts, made bracelets and a kindness chain with the whole school. Rhyming is a little tricky sometimes, we learned how to identify and match rhyming words. Our grade 2s were raising money for polar bears, we bought polar bear cookies and dressed in white. Our class made beautiful polar bear paintings. On Friday our buddies helped us with making more polar bears. Letters and NumbersThis week we practiced /f/ and number 8. Number 8 was Very tricky for some students, please practice at home. We wrote in our journals about how we can be kind.
We focused on letters and numbers this week. We learned about 'greater than' and played domino hockey to reinforce what we learned. The students rolled a die and wrote the number. They used alphabet tiles to create their name, make words and put the tiles in alphabetical order. Letters and NumbersWe practiced /u/, /l/ and number 7 this week.
We celebrated friendship this week by exchanging valentine cards and doing valentine centres. Jim Dine inspired Heart ArtBetter Together! This week we celebrated the french celebration Carnaval. There were so many school wide activities that we were able to take part in; Sugar Shack, Ice castle, Snow sculptures, Broom ball and hot chocolate. In our classroom, we made ice castles out of tiles and paper blocks. We worked on our fine motors skills by weaving sashes like bonhomme's, tracing and cutting out bonhomme masks. The students drew a picture of their favourite part of Carnaval in their journal. Awesome ice castle!!
Letter and NumbersWe practiced /o/and the number 6 this week.
We read and acted out the story "The Mitten". Ask your child to retell the story to you, they should be able to sequence the animals that go in the mitten: mole, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox, bear and mouse. The students also completed many centres with winter animals.
After reading, retelling and acting out the story, we chose our own animal to put in our mitten. Flip it up to see what's inside. 2020 is the Year of the Rat for Chinese New Year. They celebrate with firecrackers, dragon & lion dance, red and gold banners, red envelopes filled with money, cleaning their homes, getting haircuts and eating yummy food with family and friends. The children chose at least 2 characters to draw in their journal. Some students got 6 done, Wow!! Letters and NumbersThis week we practiced /d/ and 4.
It sure was cold out this week, Brrr!! We continued to learn about snow and explore winter centres. The children made sleds, decorated and painted toques, made a snowman sequence crown, played a math game that added 2 dice together and had snowball races using Styrofoam alls and eye droppers .
Letters and NumbersThis week we practiced /r/, /m/ and the number 3. I have included the songs that I use to teach printing numbers. BuddiesWe made beautiful paper this week and put our name and our grade 4 buddy's name in a snowman on it. Welcome back! I was very happy to hear all about the children's holiday break. They drew pictures in their journal all about it. We have been learning about snow and snowflakes, ask your child how many sides snowflakes have. They should say 6 🙂. GymIn gym we are learning floor hockey skills; how to hold a stick, move the puck and give and receive a pass.
