This week we discovered what the inside of a pumpkin looks like, made owl babies, designed jack-o-lanterns, and drew owl eyes. The children guessed the diameter of a pumpkin, carved pumpkins and wore their costumes to school for our halloween party. The children also practiced making the letter "P".
The children have been using ten frames to write their names, compare the length of their name to their peers and play games. These activities reinforce number sense of the numerals 1-10. The children can demonstrate many ways to make the number 10 . This is an on going theme in kindergarten math.
This week the students did lots of activities with pumpkins. They colored patterns on pumpkins and then used leaf glitter to decorate them. We did an experiment to see what would happen if we mixed yellow and red paint. There were lots of different ideas of the colour we would make! Ask your child what their guess was. Next week we will use the finger painting to make a jack-o-lantern.
This week we started looking at owls. The children have learned; the parts of an owl, that they are nocturnal, an owl's eyes do not move in their socket so their heads can turn all the way around to the back, they have great hearing because of the same of their head. The children learned to draw an owl and make an owl craft for our bulletin board.
We have started the Jolly Phonics reading program in our classroom. The first sound we learn is /s/. Please practice saying the sound, writing the letter, as well as singing the song and doing the action for each letter learned. The link provided has a british accent, sorry about that. I do not sing it with the accent. Next week we learn /a/ and /t/. This week we discussed turkeys and what we were thankful for. The children looked at pictures and drew a turkey after we did step by step drawing and they decorated a turkey with many items.
This week, we have been working on sequencing stories, making fall trees with ripped paper and sponges, making leaf rubbings and patterns. We used water colors to paint trees and leaves after we looked very closely at many different kinds of leaves that children brought in. The children also drew pictures of themselves.
Today our school ran the Terry Fox Run. We started our day with an assembly involving a special guest who spoke to the children about having cancer and losing a leg to this terrible disease.
