Kindergarten was lucky enough to have a chef from the Italian Market and a RCMP officer visit us this week. The chef showed us where vanilla comes from and let us smell the vanilla pod and se the beans inside. She made sugar cookie batter and we baked them. We decorated them and ate them the next day. They were so yummy! The RCMP officer told us all about his uniform, badges and job. Letters and NumbersThis week we learned the letter and sound for /h/ and /r/. We also drew 1 in our journals. CentresThe classroom has new centres this week. I put out a Mail centre which the children can write a letter to a friend, put a stamp on it and 'mail' it in our mail box.
This week we continued with the doctor centre but we also opened up a vet centre, florist centre and a grocery store. The children have really enjoyed learning about the different jobs and pretending to be in those professions. This week we started talking about community helpers. Who are they? What do they do? How can they help us? We had a police officer come in and tell us all about her job. She talked about all of the tools she uses to help people. What kids of vehicles polices can drive or ride, the kids were very excited and surprised to see the police horses! We have fireman costume, a rescue costume, an apron for a chef in our house centre. The children have also enjoyed going to our Doctor centre. There is a receptionist, doctors, nurses and patients. They have taken very good care of each other. In our roomWe have continued to practice the group one letters and sounds, please continue to practice them at home as well. Next week we will learn the next group of letters. The children worked on math, counting and writing numbers. Last week we planted a few pumpkin seeds IN a pumpkin and they are beginning to grow!
The children have learned the first group of letters in our JollyPhonics reading program; s,a.t.i.p.n. We have been practicing saying, identifying and reading these letter sounds. I have sent home some practice sheets with your child for home. OwlsNature TableWe have rocks of different sizes and tree cookies in our nature table. The children have been exploring, building and creating all kinds of interesting things. We had a great time celebrating Halloween. We dressed up and went on a parade through the school to show them off. The children did a scavenger hunt in our classroom and did many centres. They made pattern bracelets and pictures with stickers. Some children even made our 'Five Pumpkins on a Gate" picture.
