We had a great time celebrating Halloween. We dressed up and went on a parade through the school to show our costumes off. The children did a scavenger hunt in our classroom and did many centres. They made pattern bracelets and pictures with stickers. On Monday the children cleaned out some pumpkins, drew faces on them and cut them out to make jack o'lanterns. During journals, the children drew pictures of themselves in their costume and tried to identify the initial sound in the word. The children made Many haunted houses this week. I played spooky music, turned some of the lights off and they got creative. They made signs and art for the houses as well. LettersThis week we learned the letter /i/ Making facesEach child was asked to make a face and take the picture on their own. They are interesting!
We have been very busy doing halloween themed activities. This week the children did a science experiment to see what happens when we mix yellow and red paint, there were lots of interesting guesses! The children then turned their finger paint experiment into our pumpkin patch. LettersThis week we learned a new letter, /t/. So we can read; sat and at! The children were very excited! Please practice the sounds these letters make and printing them. Building beds and homes for Hootie, our owl. Safety Day The school had a safety day for kindergarten, grades 1 & 2 students today. We discussed pedestrian safety; how the cross at the corner, through a parking lot and near busses. Ask your child what they learned. Next week we will be discussing playground safety.
This week we learned about owls; types of owls, the sounds they make, how they hear so well, how they eat, why they regurgitate, why their heads turn almost all the way around. The students learned so much!! We watched videos and read books about owls and did many activities about owls. Please ask your child about what they learned. Owl BabiesOwl babies are called owlets, we read a story about them and made an art piece by painting paper, ripping it to make trees and then we put owls in the tree. Letter /a/This week we learned and practiced the letter /a/. Busy hands and other centers5 Little PumpkinsThis week we learned about pumpkins. Ask your child what the life cycle of a pumpkin is! We read books and watched videos about pumpkins growing. The students made a life cycle crown and decorated a pumpkin with a pattern and 'leaf glitter'. LettersThe children continue to work on printing their name, please practice at home. We made colourful name tags using pastels and paint. We also started our Jolly Phonics Program. Each week the children will learn a few letters and sounds in the alphabet. Each letter has an action and a song assigned to it. I have included the songs below. We learned /s/ today, please practice the sound and printing the letter. The students practiced printing an 's' on our chalkboards and in their green printing book. Other CentersThe children painted some lovely pictures to decorate our room. Our light table has pieces to make numbers and markers to connect the quantity with the numeral.
This week we continued to talk about fall, work on our names and explore numbers and patterns. Crunching, crunching leaves. It smells like fall. We will use these crushed leaves for an art project soon. Mat ManMat Man is our friend, he teaches us to have all of the body parts when drawing a person, except they forget the neck. Have your child sing the song for you and draw a person. We use the same lines to draw a person as we do to print our letters and numbers; Big line, little line, Big curve, little curve. I will use these terms when teaching the formation of letters and numbers. Fall treesWe painted with rolled paper this time. PatternsThe children each made a pattern and took a picture of it. Great work! Turkeys Step by step drawing of a turkey, gobble, gobble. We practiced making turkey noises too. BuddiesOur buddy class is Ms.Smart's grade 4 class.
