The Year of the Rooster. This week we learned about Chinese New Year and some of the traditions that people do to celebrate. Ask your child about it: cleaning house, getting hair cuts, giving and receiving red envelopes full of money, lion dances and what does the colour red mean? The children made lanterns with Chinese characters on them. They also did a lovely cherry blossom project. The students made dragon masks and we went on a parade through the school along with cymbals to chase away bad luck. We have some new food in our house centre too! Noodles, broccoli, dumplings, spring rolls, egg rolls and even chop sticks were there for the children to experiment with.
This week we continued to learn about winter. We read and acted out the story "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. The children each had a turn to be a character in the story and act it out. Have them tell you the story at home. Snowman FactoryLetters and NumbersThis week we practiced the letters /u/ and /l/ and the number 3. The children painted mugs and put marshmallows in their cup. They had to count the marshmallows and print the number. We went outside and built snowmen together. What a beautiful day!! This week we enjoyed lots of snow centres. The children played and built in the snow, In our math centre, the children built 'snow' a tower, measured it and recorde how tall it was. There was a snowflake drawing centre, snowflakes always have 6 points! In our art centre, the children used pastels to draw a polar bear or snowman on watercolor paper the they painted a beautiful background with watercolor paints. They turned out Amazingly! The children were also working on making a snowman with a sponge and paint. GymnasticsIn gym, we are working on gymnastics. The children learned many 'movements' and balances. Some were very tricky, they really had to focus. BuddiesWe visited the grade 4 classroom to do buddies. Our grade 4 buddy taught us how to use paper and scissors to make snowflakes. We look forward to our next project with them.
This week we have been learning about winter and winter animals. The children learned about polar bears, where snow comes from and what we can do with snow. The children havw taken home a snowman to decorate, I can't wait to see them all when they return to school. Get creative! JournalsThe children drew a picture and wrote about something from their winter break. It was wonderful to hear all of the stories. MathThe children wrote the numbers from 1-10 and then put the correct number of dots beside the number. Some of the children are writing the numbers backwards but that's alright. We are working on it.
