This week we continued to read fairy tales and fractured fairy tales, we drew pictures and wrote sentences about "The Three Little Pigs" and planted beans. In gym, we continued to practice our hockey skills and we learned ringette. In math, we started our shapes units. This week we discussed and reviewed 2D shapes and on Thursday we learned about 3D shapes. Next week we will continue 3D shapes; drawing, identifying and sorting them. Fairy TalesThis week we continued to read fairy tales and fractured fairy tales. In their journals, the children created a house out of any material they wanted, just like in "The three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig". We also planted beans in hopes that we can have a giant bean stalk grow in our classroom! RainOur poem this week was about rain, it should have been about snow. Stuffies Completed!!The children are so very proud of their creations! There are a few missing as some children were away but they turned out beautifully!! In the coming weeks the children will write stories about their animals. The animals will stay at school for a while but the children get to interact with them each center time.
This week the students discussed how rainbows are made, they had lots of interesting ideas! Ask your child how rainbows are made. We also started learning about and reading fairy tales. We have read many different versions of The Three Little Pigs and fractured fairy tales such as: The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat bad Wolf. Ask your child to retell some of these stories. In math, we talked about counting down. The children played a game in which they rolled a number then count backwards from that number. The students also did a sound center in which they shook eggs that were filled with items from our classroom and they had to decide which item were in the eggs. StuffiesOur volunteers came back and helped the students finish their stuffies. Now they have ears, legs, manes, tails, crowns etc. Planting with BuddiesWe planted bean seeds with our buddies, can't wait to watch them grow. Fancy DayTracey Kuffner came to our classroom to make wool stuffies with us. We started by drawing our stuffie in our journal After we created our animal, we put them all on the blind, sprinkled it with water and soap then we rolled, and rolled and rolled and rolled!! When we opened it up the wool had stuck together into a strong fabric. Tracey washed the soap out of the fabric, let it dry and then traced the heads and bodies on the students fabric. Our wonderful volunteers cut them out, stuffed and glued the heads onto the bodies. Next, the children will design the legs, ears, manes and accessories for their animals. I will post pics this Friday of them.
This week we continued to discuss spring. We made chicks cracking out of eggs, drew rabbits faces, made three letter puzzle words, addition sentences and made our wool for our stuffy. We also learned new kindergarten words for our poem, Spring. Kindergarten WordsWe are starting to learn sight words, we call them kindergarten words. The children identify and circle them each day on our poem, as well as in their poetry notebook. This week we drew pictures and sentences to share our spring break stories. The children made a "Counting Eggs" book that we are using for guided reading. We discussed that characters are the same on each page and when we read, we put our finger under each word as they read it. Letters and NumbersOur last letter sound that we had to learn is /qu/. The children were very excited that we have learned them all! GymIn physical Education we have started floor hockey. The children have learned the correct way to hold a stick, to move a puck and to pass to a friend.
