This week we did lots of fall, turkey and Thanksgiving centres. We used paint in fall colours to make trees, built a tower, a zip line, a maze and much more. We talked about Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for.
Mat ManWe learned to use big line, little line, big curve and little curve to make our friend Mat Man. We use all 4 of these lines to create letters and numbers. This are pre-writing skills. We drew ourself on our name page and we practiced lines on chalkboards. JournalsThis week we talked about Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for. In our journals, each student drew a picture of what they were thankful for. Ask your child which journal is theirs. Super Hero DayOur annual Terry Fox Run was a huge success, our target fundraising goal was $1000 but we raised over $2800!! As a reward we got to dress up like super heros today.
This week in kindergarten we continued to learn about apples. We tasted 4 different kinds of apples, ask your child what their favorite was. We made apple pie, read Ten Apples On Top and created ten apples on top of our head using a pattern. Safety WeekSafety Week started with a visit from Shelley Steel. She gave us lots of great information about how to stay safe and what to do in case of a fire. Make sure you make an evacuation plan with your family, 2 ways out and find a meeting place.
Fall is upon us and we are learning about apples. We have learned were they come from, parts of the apple, we have weighed them, made sequence story crowns, made baskets out of paper, made ladders to pick apples out of toothpicks and experimented in the water to see what floats. It was a busy week! On Friday we'll do our Terry Fox Run and make apple Kandinsky art with our buddies.
International Dot Day is Sept.15, based on the book TheDot. Below is a link to the story in video. Each year we love to celebrate it with lots of dot activities. Every child made at least one dot out of pastel and paint and we made a beautiful tree. We also did our name in dots, made patterns with dot stickers, used bingo daubers to make pictures at the paint centre, sorted buttons, sorted and made patterns at the light table. Our kissing hand, how we felt on the first day of school. Our school has been learning about empathy, we have watched videos and read stories about it. Ask your child what empathy means, hopefully they can say that it is understanding how others are feeling. Here is a great we read at school if you want to watch it with your child. BuddiesHere is our finished project with our grade 4 buddies and the other kindergarten class. Better Together!
Each morning we start our day with Busy Hands; building manipulatives, puzzles and games. The children can build amazing things. We made our 'Me Bag' for the children to bring home and fill with special items to share with the class on their Citizen of the Day day in September or October. Send the bag in on their special day. The students also practiced their names in dots, made a puzzle with their name and worked on their fine motor skills with chopsticks to sort pom poms, In math, we learned about patterns, lots of patterns: colour patterns, action patterns, sound patterns and so many more. Each child made a pattern on our light table. \Welcome to my blog, I'll update it each week to show you what we've been up to in kindergarten. This week we were So busy! We got to know each other, practice our routines, went to gym, music, the park and the children had a chance to explore the centres in our classroom. Friday the children got to meet their grade 4 buddy from Mrs.Galvin's class. BuddiesKeeping with our Chester theme, the students and their buddy each coloured a part of a large picture, next week the afternoon kindergarten will colour their squares and then we will put them all together. "Better Together" is our school motto. I'll post a pic when it is completed.
Super busy week, this week!! We had our dads (moms and grandmas too) come in and build bird houses, we made Father's Day cards, drew chrysalises in our butterfly book and sang for our families at the kindergarten celebration.
This week we continued to learn about insects. We looked at videos about bees , ants, water boatmen and dragonflies. They are all so different but all insects too. The students made ants and labeled the; head, thorax and abdomen. Fish Creek Field TripWe had our FishCreek field trip today. It started out fun, we saw lots of cool nature items and then the sky opened up and Poured on us. There were some tears and frozen children but we are hardy Canadian peeps and we made it! Here are some pictures before it rained.
This week we watched our caterpillars grow and we learned about metamorphosis, molting and the life cycle of a butterfly. In math, the children made caterpillars from 1-10 dots long using bingo dauber and they wrote the number word beside. It was a big job, we are getting ready for grade 1. The students made Jacob's ladder caterpillars out of paper and a clothes pin caterpillar which we will turn into a butterfly when our caterpillars turn into butterflies. We looked at butterflies and learned that they are symmetrical so we made beautiful butterflies with marker and paint.
This week we learned about 3D shapes. The children learned to identify 3D shapes and sort 2D and 3D shapes. We also had our field trip to the zoo, so exciting! CaterpillarsOur caterpillars have arrived!! They are So tiny but they will grow very fast. The children started their Butterfly Observation Book by drawing a scientific drawing of a caterpillar. They have begun to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly. Zoo Field TripWe had the most perfect day at the zoo today, it wasn't hot, it wasn't cold, it was just right!!
