This week we had new Christmas centres. The children made stockings by 'sewing' and decorating paper, they put alphabet decorations on our tree at the light table centre, we decorated our trees, painted reindeer, drew reindeer, made pattern bracelets, and made cookies in our bake shop.
This week we had a lot of Christmas centres to explore. We: made cards for our buddies, practiced wrapping gifts, made lego maze for a bell, used stacking cups to make 'trees' painted a wooden tree, played ispy, learned how to bump and set in gym. It was Very busy!! Letters and NumbersWe read many 12 Days of Christmas stories and songs. Each child is making a 12 Days of Christmas sheet. We have 8 done so far. It's a lot of work.
This week we were visited by Constable Gemma and an ear specialist. We have home work from the police officer, the children need to learn their address, in case of emergency. We practiced writing our address. LettersWe practiced c & k this week. Door Decorating ContestJJ is having a door decorating contest. I think we have a good chance to win. All 45 kindergarten students made a small tree then we put them together to make a big tree!! If you look closely, you'll see faces on the snowflakes. The afternoon faces will be added on Friday.
This week we continued learning about community helpers. We had an RCMP and a fire fighter as guest speakers. We got to touch all of fire fighter Shelley's gear and tools. Constable Nick told us all about being an RCMP officer. We had some dentist centre out in which we got to make teeth out of play dough, some even has cavities. Ask you child how many baby teeth they have. They should tell you 20, 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom. Letters and NumbersWe practiced /n/ this week and we sounded out lots of words with the sounds we've learned so far. Below is a link to all of the songs. Citizen of the DayHere is the next Citizen of the Day project. This new round will start in December. I sent a digital copy of the December calendar home Friday. Please send in your child's completed paper on or before their special day.
Who are community helpers? What do they do? WE have learned about a doctor's office, a grocery store, a restaurant and many more this week. LettersWe practiced /p/ this week.
We continued to learn about owls this week. We listened to some different calls and found out where they live. Metis WeekWe are lucky enough to have Mrs. Rivard on staff, grade 1, who is Metis. She taught us about the Metis culture, buffalo, sashes, the jig, red river carts and beautiful beading. We made infinity symbols with beads, other grades did making sashes and pointillism. Next week I will post a picture of the competed bulletin board, I kept a few infinity artifacts for the board, only the children who were willing to part with it for a week or so. I'll send them home when they come down. LettersThis week we practiced /i/. In gym, we have been doing dance. We tried the Red River Jig for Metis week and we followed some other dances.
This week we learned about owls. Ask your child: what they eat, about their eyes, about their hearing, do they make a sound when they fly, what is nocturnal and regurgitate mean? Remembrance DayThe students learned about Remembrance Day and we discussed what peace means. We read books about peace and wrote in our journals what peace means to them. LettersThis week we practiced /t/ BuddiesWe made owls out of our kindergarten hand and grade 4 hand.
This week we had a lot of fun doing halloween activities and a special mitten art project for our upcoming fundraiser. Halloween day was a blur, we had gym and music so our centre time was short, your child was able to only do a couple of our special centres, ask them which on they did. This week we learned about pumpkins and their life cycle. We counted pumpkins, coloured them in a pattern and used 'leaf glitter' to make them beautiful, we did an experiment to see what would happen if we mixed yellow and red paint together, ask your child what happened. We turned our finger painting into awesome pumpkins for our pumpkin patch. LettersThis week we practiced /a/ . Please practice printing the letters and singing the songs. I have included the link to the songs we will learn throughout the year. This week we were exploring fall. We have leaves to smell, touch and crunch in our nature table, we have drawn leaves and painted them with water colors, made fall trees with modeling clay, painted trees at our paint centre and experimented with colors to try to match leaf colours.
LettersThis week we started our Jolly Phonics program. This program uses songs, stories and actions to teach children the letter sounds. We begin with the sound /s/, it is tricky to print so please practice at home. BuddiesWe made leaf gliders, also know as paper airplanes shaped like leaves. We took them outside to try them out and modify them if they needed it. It was a little breezy so some of the planes went very far.
